Our Speaker

Speaker’s welcome

Welcome to the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of Western Australia, the lower house or ‘people’s house’. As Speaker, I chair proceedings when the House is sitting, as well as being the spokesperson for the Legislative Assembly. I work closely with the Hon Kate Doust MLC, President of the Legislative Council, on overall management of the Parliament.

The Legislative Assembly plays an important role in our parliamentary democracy because, although it is one part of the State’s legislature, it is the House where government is formed in this State. While the House is independent of the Legislative Council, it shares the work of legislating, scrutinising government performance and representing issues that are important to the people of Western Australia.

At the core of who I am is a belief in following dreams. A dream requires discipline but the dream is yours and no one can take it from you. It is something that I learned at a very young age. It is the reason I became an Olympic athlete, representing Australia at the 1968 Olympics, and it is the reason why I am a parliamentarian.

I learned a lot from athletics: self-belief, the ups-and-downs of life and the type of work ethic that is needed to succeed at any level. Athletics is about dedication and discipline. These qualities are also required in order to be an effective parliamentarian. While we all approach challenges differently as Members, what we share is a common commitment to improving the way that we as Western Australians live our lives.

I am honoured to be a long-standing Member of the Legislative Assembly and to have been elected by the Members of this House as Speaker. I am committed to seeing the discipline of the House upheld. Equity in the treatment of people and fairness are also very important principles to me.

I hope you will take the time to explore this site and that you will learn more about your Parliament, the role of your representatives in Parliament and how you can participate in our parliamentary democracy. My invitation to you is come to Parliament House and find out about how your Parliament and your Members work to support our community. Our friendly tour staff would love to show you through.

Kind regards

Hon Peter Watson MLA

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly
