Elected in 2013 as the Member for Bassendean in the WA Parliament, Dave is the Minister for Water; Forestry, Innovation and ICT, Science, and Youth. Dave has lived in nearby Bayswater with his family for the past 15 years. His kids go to local schools.

Dave was the elected WA Secretary of United Voice, the union that represents frontline staff in WA’s schools, hospitals, childcare, disability and aged care centres along with cleaners, security and hospitality workers.

Dave has run campaigns including against the privatisation of Western Australia's hospitals and schools, and for a better deal for cleaners.

Dave and a couple of others successfully ran a campaign to see that banking services were retained in their local area when the big four banks started to pull out. Today, the community bank he played a primary role in establishing has two branches and is now one of the most successful in Australia.

About the Bassendean Electorate

Number of Electors: 26,325 (9 March 2015)
Source: Western Australian Electoral Commission. State Electorate Information.

Nomenclature:
The name "Bassendean" was first recorded by Surveyor J.W. Gregory in 1841 as the name of 1455 acres for Mr P. Brown, who had his homestead on the West Bank of Swan River. Peter Brown (or Broun) was WA's first Colonial Secretary in 1832 and apparently named his property on the Swan River after a family property in England, Bassendean in Berwickshire. This area was also previously known as West Guildford. A competition to choose a new name for the area was held in 1922; two school children nominated the name "Bassendean" after Peter Brown's property.
