Understanding Your Parliament

A resource developed for new migrants and people with English as additional language or dialect.

Understanding how laws are made and how your Parliament works is good for all of us to know. Many new arrivals to our country decide they want to become Australian citizens. Everyone who becomes an Australian citizen has to make the following pledge.

From this time forward under God*

I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,

Whose democratic beliefs I share,

Whose rights and liberties I respect, and

whose laws I will uphold and obey.

* A person may choose whether or not to use the words ‘under God’.

We have written the booklets below to help you understand how Australia’s democratic Governments work, with more detail given about the Western Australian Parliament. It will help you understand how our laws are made.
