Position Title:Advisory Officer
Level and Salary:Level 7 ($117,725 - $126,033 per annum plus superannuation)

Primary Responsibilities and Additional Information:Applications are sought for two Advisory Officer positions in the Legislative Council Committee Office. The positions are full-time on a 2-year contract basis.

Advisory Officers work with the Committees of the Legislative Council, assisting in the conduct of their inquiries and production of reports. The Committees of the Legislative Council conduct inquiries into a broad range of matters affecting Western Australia.

Advisory Officers research and provide advice to Committees and are responsible for the drafting of reports at the Committee’s instruction. High-level research and writing skills are essential. The role also requires excellent communication skills and the ability to analyse complex and competing arguments.

Selection Criteria

Essential:
· Appropriate and relevant tertiary qualification
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Demonstrated facilitation and negotiation skills
· Experience in conducting research, writing and preparing reports
· Ability to analyse complex issues and evaluate competing arguments
· Basic keyboarding and formatting skills in Microsoft Word
· Understanding of, and experience with, contemporary information technology.

Desirable:
· Legal qualification
· Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process and parliamentary/political system in Western Australia
· Experience in the conduct of inquiries
· Understanding of administrative law
· Understanding of the functions and operations of public sector agencies.

Staff of the Legislative Council must be entirely apolitical and discreet as they deal with sensitive and confidential information in a political environment. Meeting the needs of the Parliament is paramount, requiring committed and flexible staff so deadlines can be met.
