Department:Legislative Assembly
Section:Committees Office
Employment Type:Permanent, Contract, Full Time
Length of Contract:Permanent and fixed term 12 month contract
Primary Responsibilities and Additional Information:Applications are sought for two Principal Research Officers with the Legislative Assembly Committee Office. One full-time permanent position and one full-time 12 month fixed term contract with the possibility of extension.

We are looking for suitably qualified people to work primarily for parliamentary standing committees. The committees cover diverse portfolios such as public accounts, economics and industry, community development and justice, education and health, and oversee the role of the Corruption and Crime Commission and the Children’s Commissioner. Relevant tertiary qualifications are necessary.

A Principal Research Officer is a committee’s principal adviser, organiser, analyst and writer, and manages a Research Officer. The Principal Research Officer acts as secretary to the committee by preparing and overseeing papers for committee meetings, including minute-taking and general committee administration. Some work outside of normal hours may be required, as will travel with the committee from time to time.

The position involves daily exposure to the Parliament and its scrutiny and political processes, frequent contact with parliamentarians, access to the views and opinions of expert specialist witnesses, a high degree of autonomy and independence in managing the work of the committee’s staff, and the opportunity to draft committee reports for eventual publication.

Staff of the Legislative Assembly must be entirely apolitical and discreet as they deal with sensitive and confidential information in a political environment. Meeting the needs of the Parliament is paramount, requiring committed and flexible staff so deadlines can be met.
