Primary Responsibilities and Additional Information:Applications are invited from persons interested in the Parliamentary environment. The Legislative Assembly is currently seeking to fill a fixed term 12 month contract Research Officer position working 3 days per week, commencing as soon as is practicable. The successful applicant will be required to undertake research and prepare draft reports and papers primarily for parliamentary committee inquiries.

The Research Officer is part of a small team and reports directly to a Principal Research Officer who has responsibility for the work of a committee. The position also assists in identifying major issues and matters requiring consideration by a committee, and preparing and communicating strategic and procedural advice to committees. In addition, the Research Officer provides administrative support to a committee, including preparing correspondence, responding to public enquiries and organising committee travel. Some work outside of normal hours may be required, as will travel with committees from time to time.

The positions offer daily exposure to the Parliament and its scrutiny and political processes; frequent contact with parliamentarians on a committee; access to the views and opinions of expert specialist witnesses; a degree of autonomy and independence; the opportunity to assist in drafting reports for a committee’s review; and participation at a key level in the work of the Legislative Assembly.

Applicants will need to meet the following criteria:

Essential:
· Appropriate and relevant tertiary qualification.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Demonstrated experience in conducting research, writing and preparing reports.
· Ability to analyse complex policy issues and evaluate competing arguments.
· Ability to work effectively in a small team to accomplish committee goals.
· Understanding of, and experience with, contemporary information technology.

Desirable:
· Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process and parliamentary/political system in Western Australia.
