Parliamentary Office Holders

Current Parliamentary Office Holders

Parliamentary office holders are those non-permanent officials (such as the Clerks) who are members of the House in which they serve.

Legislative Council

The President of the Legislative Council is elected by the members of the Council. The President’s function is to regulate debate and to ensure that the proceedings are carried out in accordance with the standing orders of the House and with established Parliamentary custom. The President is also known, along with the Speaker, as a Presiding Officer.

The Deputy President and Chair of Committees is elected by the members of the Council and carries out the functions of the President in the absence of the President.

The Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council is the leader of the Government party in the Council.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council is the leader of the Opposition party in the Council.

The Government and Opposition Whips are managers of party members in the House, who are responsible for organising members to take part in the debates and votes.

Legislative Assembly

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly is elected by the members of the Assembly. The Speaker’s function is to regulate debate and to ensure that the proceedings are carried out in accordance with the standing orders of the House and with established Parliamentary custom. The Speaker is also known, along with the President, as a Presiding Officer.

The Deputy Speaker is elected by the members of the Legislative Assembly and carries out the functions of the Speaker in the absence of the Speaker.

The Leader of the House is the Government member who arranges and manages Government business in the Assembly.

The Leader of the Opposition is the leader of the party which is the next largest after the Government party in the Assembly and made up of members who do not support the Government.
