Working at the Parliament of Western Australia

Welcome to the Parliament of Western Australia. Our Parliament comprises the Department of the Legislative Council, the Department of the Legislative Assembly and the Parliamentary Services Department. Each department has a head of department who is responsible for ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and effectively.

The two chamber departments provide advisory and procedural support to their respective houses and members. The Parliamentary Services Department delivers services and facilities to the chamber departments, members of Parliament, staff, visitors and other users of the Parliament.

Staff perform a wide variety of tasks including research and report writing, procedural advice and administration in the chambers and committees, IT services, building security and building maintenance, transcription services, community education, library services, catering and gardening.

The parliamentary environment is fast-paced, dynamic and demanding, driven by the work of the houses of Parliament. There is an expectation that staff employed by the Parliament will deliver efficient, effective and apolitical services to support members of Parliament in the conduct of their functions, while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.

Parliamentary privilege applies to the houses of Parliament, their members and individuals participating in parliamentary proceedings and staff must be aware of the application of parliamentary privilege in the performance of their work.

As the Parliament sits for extended hours three days a week for approximately 22 weeks a year, job roles servicing the chambers are required to meet associated work demands.

At Parliament, each member of our staff is integral to how well the institution functions and is valued for what they contribute. Collaboration between business units and across departments and a focus on improving the way we deliver services is essential for Parliament to achieve its organisational outcomes and constitutional function.

Staff of the Parliament of Western Australia are not public servants. Parliament is independent of government and staff act professionally and in a nonpartisan manner on behalf of the Parliament.

We offer a welcoming environment for current and new staff.

Please note that the Parliament is not responsible for the recruitment of staff for members of Parliament. This responsibility belongs to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
