Speaker's biography

The Hon Peter Watson MLA was employed by Australia Post for over 35 years and worked his way up from a telegram boy to management. He ran a newsagency and gift shop for a period, gaining a good understanding of the demands of a small business.

He was an Olympic middle-distance runner which fostered in him a continuing commitment to sports, and which resulted in him hosting a local sports radio show on ABC Radio for 13 years. He has also coached junior sport, watching young people develop as both sports people and individuals.

Mr Watson was elected as the Member for Albany in 2001 and has held the seat at subsequent elections.

He has held various roles in Parliament including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Sport and Recreation and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Great Southern, membership on numerous Legislative Assembly parliamentary committees, and roles as Acting Speaker in the House.

He was elected to the role of Speaker by the Members of the Legislative Assembly on 11 May 2017.
