Kapi Winki, 2006 – Wingu Tingima

WARNING: Please be warned that the following article names a deceased Indigenous person

'Kapi Winki' features traditional methods of sand painting and ceremonial body painting, transferred onto canvas, to confirm the ancient bond between Aboriginal culture and the land it is bestowed upon. The artist’s use of line, bold colours and form together with ancient and contemporary symbols emphasises a strong connection to her country and culture of the Western Desert.

Part of the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s collection, the artwork has been generously loaned to the WA Parliament and is on display in the Speaker’s Corridor. Visitors may view the painting by joining one of the monthly art tours of Parliament House.

Wingu Tingima was a senior Pitjantjatjara woman born in 1920 at the Nyumun rock hole (near Kuru Ala, in the Great Victorian Desert). Tingima developed an interest in painting later in life, and was 70 years old when she picked up her first paint brush. She continued painting until her death in 2010.
