Reformation is part of a series of works, Recinder, which are composed of ash sourced from the aftermath of bushfires. The series speaks of loss in the Australian landscape, and poses questions about Australia’s colonial attitudes.
Reformation is created with ash from bushfires ignited by thunderstorms in the Tarkine region in Tasmania, mixed with polymer and oils on canvas.
Part of Edith Cowan University’s art collection, the artwork has been generously loaned to the WA Parliament and is on display in the Members’ Corridor. Visitors can view the painting by joining one of the monthly art tours of Parliament House.
Nigel Hewitt is based in both Western Australia and Tasmania. He studied art in Perth and has exhibited extensively around Western Australia. His works are represented in a number of significant collections, and he has previously won the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture. In 2015 Hewitt won the Glover Prize, one of Australia’s most significant landscape art awards
