History and purpose of the committee
The Select Committee into the Appropriateness of Powers and Penalites for Breaches of Parliamentary Privilege and Contempts of Parliament was established during the previous Parliament on 5 June 2008. On Thursday, 7 August 2008 the Parliament of Western Australia was prorogued. This had the effect of terminating all the current business of Parliament. This means that the sittings of Parliament cease and the Legislative Council's referral of this inquiry to the previous Committee falls away. The previous Committee's inquiry into this matter ceased. The Select Committee was re-established in the 38th Parliament on 12 November 2008. The House granted an extension of the reporting deadline to 7 May 2009.
