The Department of the Legislative Council is seeking to fill a senior management role to oversee its core services and to drive innovation and excellence in the delivery of parliamentary support.
The Department facilitates and supports the work of the 36 (soon to be 37) Members of the Legislative Council—the Upper House of the State Parliament of Western Australia.
It is an exciting time to join the Legislative Council’s collaborative and committed Executive Management Team. The Department has a clear strategy to continuously improve its core business, provide enhanced services to Members of Parliament, and to continue to be an employer of choice.
About the role:
Two Clerk Assistants form a critical part of the Executive Management Team of the Department. Each Clerk Assistant provides proactive leadership and strategic direction to a functional area of the Department, and is responsible for managing, training and motivating a team of up to 25 staff.
The Clerk Assistant (Committees) manages the Legislative Council Committee Office, a multidisciplinary team providing research, procedural and administrative support to committees composed of Members of Parliament.
The Clerk Assistant (House) manages the day-to-day operations of the Legislative Council Chamber and manages a dedicated team of procedural and administrative experts. This position is primarily responsible for coordinating the accurate and timely production and maintenance of the important records of the Legislative Council.
In addition to the managing their respective offices, each Clerk Assistant serves as a “Table Officer” in the Chamber of the Legislative Council, providing on the spot procedural advice and support directly to Members of Parliament in a high pressure, fast-paced, political environment.
The Clerk Assistant roles are rotational, and appointees may be required to rotate into and perform the role of the other position. The current vacancy exists in the role of Clerk Assistant (House).
