I refer to the government's welcome commitment to
reform the Criminal Law (Mentally Impaired Accused) Act. Will a bill amending
the act be introduced into Parliament this year?

Hon SUE ELLERY: The government is progressing work on
a bill to repeal and replace the Criminal Law (Mentally Impaired Accused) Act
1996 in line with a number of commitments taken to the 2017 election. This bill
is a high priority for the McGowan government, but it is a particularly complex
piece of legislation. The new bill is currently being drafted and a comprehensive
implementation plan is being developed. It will be introduced into Parliament
following consultation with key stakeholders, which is critical in light of the
complexity of the matters involved.
