Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 588 asked in the Legislative Council on 1 September 2021 by Hon Dr Steve Thomas

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

ROYALTIES FOR REGIONS

588. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the Minister for Regional Development:

I refer to the royalties for regions funding program and to the Pilbara, Kimberley, wheatbelt, south west, midwest, great southern, goldfields–Esperance, Gascoyne and Peel regions.

(1) What was the total royalties for regions funding provided to each of these regions by financial year from the program's inception in December 2008 until March 2017?

(2) What was the total royalties for regions funding provided to each of these regions by financial year from March 2017 to 30 June 2021?

Hon DARREN WEST replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Regional Development, I provide the following answer.

(1) I know the member has been quite outspoken about the billions of dollars that were wasted through royalties for regions under the previous Liberal–National government. For expenditure by the previous government, I suggest that the member review past budget papers.

(2) In relation to expenditure under our government, I note that our last budget delivered a record $7.5 billion infrastructure investment in the regions. Royalties for regions is only a portion of this investment.

In relation to royalties for regions, I provide an indicative breakdown by region in tabular form and I seek leave to have the response incorporated into Hansard.

[Leave granted for the following material to be incorporated.]
