Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1224 asked in the Legislative Council on 27 November 2018 by Hon Colin Tincknell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

3 OCEANS TWIN TOWERS DEVELOPMENT — SCARBOROUGH —COASTAL EXPERIENCE CENTRE

1224. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the minister representing the Minister for Tourism:

The 3 Oceans development plan at Scarborough has over 1 000 square metres earmarked to house a two-level WA coastal experience centre. The developer has indicated that this is part of its community benefit criteria and the site will be for the use of Tourism WA.

(1) Was Tourism WA consulted about housing and operating the proposed centre within the 3 Oceans development prior to plans being submitted; and, if so, when and where were they consulted and what was their response?

(2) Does Tourism WA plan to house and operate such a centre within the 3 Oceans complex; if yes, has a deal been negotiated with the 3 Oceans developers; and, if not, why not?

(3) What would be the purpose of the proposed WA coastal experience centre and what exactly would the community benefit from?

(4) Was the proposal for a WA coastal experience centre put forward by the 3 Oceans developers or did this proposal come at the request of Tourism WA?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The following material has been provided to me by the Minister for Tourism.

(1) Yes, but not about housing and operating the proposed centre. Tourism WA's advice was sought on which tourism elements or attractions could be included in the development. It was consulted on 30 January 2018. Tourism WA suggested the focus of any such inclusion should concentrate on coastal and aquatic activities to target experiences that are anchored to the area.

(2) No; this is a private development.

(3) When consulted, Tourism WA was advised of an intention for an interactive hub to promote tourism for Perth and the regions.

(4) The proposal was put forward by 3 Oceans Group.
