Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 2770 asked in the Legislative Council on 11 February 2020 by Hon Alison Xamon

Question Directed to the: Minister for Education and Training
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the following sports courts at high schools – basketball, netball, tennis, soccer, volleyball, badminton, and I ask:
(a) can the Minister please provide:
(i) the standard dimensions for a full-size court;
(ii) the approved dimensions for schools; and
(iii) if applicable, the dates at which the school sizes were varied from the Department of Sports recommended sizes; and
(b) which schools have, or will have, non-regulation sized courts be installed and which sports will be impacted at each school?

Answered on 31 March 2020

(a) (i)   The Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries standard dimensions for a full-size court for each sport are:

    1. Basketball 28m x15m
    2. Netball 30.5m x 15.25m
    3. Tennis 23.77m x 10.97m (doubles)
    4. Soccer – a range of 90-120m long x 45-90m wide, with full adult international standard 105m x 68m
    5. Volleyball 18m x 9m
    6. Badminton 13.4m x 6.1m

(ii)   The Department of Education uses the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries approved dimensions for new schools and major refurbishments. Soccer is 91.4m x 55m with overlaid markings for hockey.

(iii)   Outdoor courts of the above sports have not varied from the recommended sizes in the last 30 years. Gymnasiums and sports halls built prior to 2009 vary in size. Since 2010, fully-enclosed sports halls have been built with a full-size basketball court (and other sports overlaid). From 2018, gymnasium and sports hall sizes were increased to allow for a full-size netball court.

b)    All WA secondary schools including new schools are provided with sports courts meeting the approved dimensions at the time of their establishment. Older secondary schools may have an enclosed gymnasium or sports hall that is not able to accommodate full sized courts for basketball and netball.  New secondary schools are also provided with a sports hall which provides for full size basketball and netball courts.
