Question On Notice No. 728 asked in the Legislative Council on 10 May 2022 by Hon Peter Collier

Question Directed to the: Minister for Emergency Services representing the Minister for Police
Parliament: 41 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the Criminal Code Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020, and I ask, since assent of the Bill to 10 May 2022, how many people have been fined under this provision?

Answered on 14 June 2022

The Western Australian Police advise:

The Criminal Code Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020 was introduced to amend The Criminal Code (WA) introducing higher maximum penalties for the offences of serious assault and threats committed in the context of COVID-19. It did not create new offences, only introduced higher penalties for existing offences when particular circumstances exist.

The court outcome is given by a judge/magistrate and is not issued by the Western Australia Police Force.
