Question Without Notice No. 648 asked in the Legislative Council on 10 October 2017 by Hon Aaron Stonehouse

Minister responding: Hon M.H. Roberts
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
Answered on 10 October 2017

      648. Hon AARON STONEHOUSE to the minister representing the Minister for Police:
I refer the minister to the minister's statement in an article in The Examiner dated 31 August 2017 as well as to her remarks on a segment of Today Tonight on 28 September 2017, in relation to the sport of airsoft, and to a report by the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia that recommended that it be legalised, to which the minister said, ''I have asked WA Police to work with representatives of the sport in relation to several issues raised in the law reform report and provide me with further advice.''
(1) On which specific issues raised in the report did the minister request further advice from WA Police?
(2) On what date did the minister request that advice?
      (3) Is the minister aware that WA Police did not accept a request for a meeting made by representatives of the Western Australia Airsoft Club on 9 September 2017?
      (4) What action does the minister plan to take to ensure that WA Police work with representatives of the sport to provide her with the advice she has requested?
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Police.
(1)–(4) My office has met with representatives of the Western Australia Airsoft Club, and continues to liaise with them. I look forward to carefully considering the regulatory framework in this area, the recommendations of the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia in its 2016 review of the Firearms Act 1973 and to hearing from a wide range of stakeholders and community groups. My office has ensured that the WA Police force has relevant information provided by representatives from the club.
