Question

I refer to page 664 of Budget Paper 2, Volume 2 and funding for Muja C and D, and I ask:
(a) will the Minister please provide a list of the work undertaken on Muja C and D for each of the following years:
(i) 2019-20;
(ii) 2020-21;
(iii) 2021-22; and
(iv) 2022-23;
(b) did Synergy consider the expected remaining life of Muja C and D prior to committing funding to undertake works;
(c) if yes to (b), what is the expected remaining life of Muja C and D;
(d) was a business case prepared to justify over $40 million in capital works;
(e) if yes to (d), will the Minister table the business case; and
(f) if no business case was prepared, what documentation was prepared before the funding was committed?

a) As with similar years, works budgeted to be undertaken at Muja C and D for each of the following years is notionally set as part of Synergy’s strategic asset planning and seeks to ensure Synergy plant operates safely and efficiently.

Currently budgeted high level capital works list for Muja C and D outlined below:

Conveyor gantry repair, fly ash dam lift, electrical equipment upgrade, fire protection upgrade, air compressor replacement, water infrastructure upgrades, turbine hall crane replacement and equipment guarding

2021-22

Electrical equipment upgrades, water infrastructure upgrades, critical power island component and equipment upgrade replacement

(b) Yes.

 

(c) The first unit of Muja C will be retired from 1 October 2022 and the second unit will be retired from 1 October 2024. There are currently no plans to retire Muja D.

 

(d) Business cases have been developed for in-flight projects and business cases will be developed for planned projects.

 

(e) No, the business cases are commercial in confidence.

 

(f) Not applicable.
