Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 76 asked in the Legislative Council on 18 February 2020 by Hon Jim Chown

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRIES AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT —STAFF — VACANCIES

76. Hon JIM CHOWN to the Minister for Agriculture and Food:

I refer to question on notice 2709, to which the minister answered that, as of 18 December 2019, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development had a total of 95 recruitments in progress.

(1) What percentage of the 95 recruitment vacancies in this department has now been filled?

(2) When will the full 95 vacancies be filled?

(3) What was the total number of applicants for the vacancies that have been filled to date?

Hon DARREN WEST replied:

Again, I acknowledge that this answer was prepared on Wednesday, 12 February. I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Agriculture and Food, I provide the following answer.

I start by noting that it is not unusual for a mid-tier public sector agency to have an ongoing vacancy rate of between five and 10 per cent.

(1) As of 10 February 2020, 42 per cent of the recruitment processes had been filled and therefore closed.

(2) We anticipate that of the remaining 54 recruitment processes, up to 50 per cent will be filled, and therefore closed, by 31 March 2020. The remaining open recruitment processes are as a result of a delayed commencement date due to the release of the selected candidate from their employer, be they private or public, or a pool recruitment process that remains open and can be used to fill additional vacancies during the coming 12 months.

(3) In total, 713 applications were received in response to the 41 recruitment processes that have been filled.
