CORRUPTION AND CRIME COMMISSIONER
— REAPPOINTMENT
364. Hon PETER COLLIER to
the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
I have four additional questions
from three members. Two are from one member. The first question is on behalf of
Hon Michael Mischin who is on urgent parliamentary business.
I refer to the Premier's
response to my question without notice 340 of 16 April, wherein he quoted a letter
from the Joint Standing Committee on the Corruption and Crime Commission to the
effect that the committee was ''unable to achieve bipartisan and
majority support for the reappointment of Hon John McKechnie, QC'' as
Corruption and Crime Commissioner, and to yesterday's Facebook post
from Mr Matthew Hughes, MLA, member for Kalamunda and of the committee.
(1) Why did the
Premier assume before the post that Mr McKechnie's appointment received
majority support but not bipartisan support?
(2) Based on the
advice that the Premier received from the committee, does the Premier concede
the possibility that —
(a) only two members;
(b) only one member; or
(c) no members of
the four-member committee supported Mr McKechnie's appointment; and, if
not, why not?
(3) Why is the
Premier certain that both Labor members of the committee supported Mr McKechnie's
appointment?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The
numbering of the question is a little bit weird. In any event, the answer is: I
refer the honourable member to my answer to Legislative Council question
without notice 340.
