Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 292 asked in the Legislative Council on 3 April 2019 by Hon Rick Mazza

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

POLICE — FIREARMS AUDIT

292. Hon RICK MAZZA to the minister representing the Treasurer:

I refer to the audit by the Office of the Auditor General to determine how effectively the Western Australia Police Force controls and regulates firearms and the Auditor General's expectation that this report would be tabled in the first quarter of 2019.

(1) Is the report ready for tabling; and, if not, why not?

(2) When will the report be tabled?

(3) Why was the report not tabled within the expected time frame?

(4) To date, how many man-hours have been dedicated to compiling the report?

(5) What is the cost of those man-hours?

(6) How many submissions under the ''Have your say'' tab did the Auditor General receive for this audit?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(6) The Auditor General is an independent integrity officer of the Parliament and has discretion in managing the office's audit program; therefore, questions such as these should be answered directly by the Auditor General. The Auditor General highly values members' interest in this report and, in the interests of streamlining this particular information request, has helpfully informed my office that the firearms audit will now be tabled in May 2019. This is a complex audit that has attracted significant community interest, a summary of which will be provided in the final report to Parliament. As per standard practice, the cost of this performance audit will also be included in the final report to Parliament.
