Question On Notice No. 1111 asked in the Legislative Council on 12 April 2018 by Hon Robin Scott

Question Directed to the: Minister for Disability Services
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

(1) In reference to the 1 July 2018 National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) roll out in Western Australia, which will see the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) assuming responsibility for the delivery of the Scheme in Western Australia, does the Minister have a contingency plan should the transition not go smoothly and effectively in rural and remote areas?
(2) Will the Minister identify the unique challenges for the delivery of the NDIS in regional WA?
(3) What measures has the Minister implemented, or will implement, to ensure that high levels of care are provided for people with disabilities in regional Western Australia who have complex needs?

Answered on 14 June 2018

  1. The Department of Communities and the NDIA have undertaken detailed risk planning to ensure issues with the potential to impact on the NDIS transition in rural and remote areas are monitored and mitigated.
  2. There are numerous unique challenges for regional service providers, some of which include: attracting and recruiting staff, the cost of service provision, isolation and distance, thin and undersupplied markets.
  3. Arrangements have been implemented between the Department of Communities and the NDIA to ensure people with complex needs are identified and receive appropriate supports regardless of where they live, and work is being further progressed.
