Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 1375 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 November 2019 by Hon Donna Faragher

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SCHOOLS — PRINCIPALS — CHINA VISIT

1375. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to the answer given to question without notice 1321 asked on 19 November 2019 about a marketing trip to China by the Department of Education and the Department of Training and Workforce Development and the statement that ''this is the first time that WA has had a plan to actively market and promote WA schools with a range of different programs''.

(1) Are other schools outside those already identified as part of the selective entry secondary schools international student program for gifted Chinese students being marketed and promoted to education agents?

(2) If yes, will the minister list the schools and the specific programs being marketed?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) On 9 August 2019, I announced as part of the second international education consortium that the Department of Education had developed an international education action plan to support schools to grow their international education enrolments and to support the McGowan government's ''Where Bright Futures Begin: International Education in Perth, Western Australia 2018–2025'' strategy. I table a copy of the media release.

[See paper 3419.]

International students have been accepted into public schools in Western Australia since 1984. In 2019, a total of 387 schools—278 primary schools and 109 secondary schools—have approval to enrol overseas fee-paying students. Currently, 145 schools—45 secondary and 100 primary—have overseas fee-paying students enrolled. The schools make the decision to enrol an international student on a case-by-case basis according to whether the school has an appropriate program for the student and whether there is an available place.

(2) The plan, including the list of schools and the specific programs, is available on the Department of Education's website. I do not have a hard copy available today. However, I undertake to table a hard copy on 26 November 2019.

Currently, 13 other secondary schools are being marketed internationally. They are in the general entry secondary schools program, which accepts students into the programs offered by a school only after the enrolment applications of local students have been considered and there are available places. The schools are: Balcatta Senior High School, Como Secondary College, Cyril Jackson Senior Campus, Greenwood College, Kent Street Senior High School, Lynwood Senior High School, Melville Senior High School, Morley Senior High School, Mount Lawley Senior High School, North Lake Senior Campus, Ocean Reef Senior High School, Thornlie Senior High School and Wanneroo Secondary College.
