Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 319 asked in the Legislative Council on 9 May 2018 by Hon Rick Mazza

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

EATON BOWLING AND SOCIAL CLUB — RENOVATION
      319. Hon RICK MAZZA to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to the proposed $2 million renovation of sporting facilities at Eaton Bowling and Social Club to create a community hub, promised by WA Labor during the 2017 state election.
(1) Has a business case been submitted by Eaton bowling club?
      (2) Eaton bowling club recently received $50 000 in state funding to start planning for the community hub. This is the first instalment of the $2 million upgrade money. How will the remaining funds be used and can a breakdown be given?
(3) Has there been an assessment of the current condition of the Eaton bowling club facilities?
(4) Does the state government consider this project to be of urgent need for the Eaton community?
(5) Did Eaton bowling club ask the then state opposition for funding commitments?
(6) If yes to (5), what was the amount and what was it to be used for?
      (7) How is this large amount of money for Eaton bowling club justified while Moora Residential College is in desperate need of funding and will be closed?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) No, as planning remains underway.
(2) The planning being undertaken currently will determine the breakdown of the project's costings.
      (3) Site visits were undertaken to assess the conditions of the current facilities. Further investigation will be undertaken as part of the ongoing planning process in conjunction with the Shire of Dardanup.
(4) Yes.
(5) Yes.
      (6) After discussions surrounding the proposed concept, a figure of $2 million was agreed. The concept was to upgrade the ageing facilities to allow the bowling club to develop into an inclusive, multi-use community hub, capable of hosting playgroups, sport for people with disability and other community activities. This will enable the club, an important Eaton institution, to become financially sustainable.
      (7) The McGowan government is getting on with the job and honouring our election commitments. The Eaton community hub will be a fantastic facility and is sure to become a pillar of the rapidly growing Eaton community, providing a space for a diverse range of user groups and members of the public to meet, recreate, gather and hold functions and social events. I am proud that this government is investing in shared, multi-user facilities in regional areas that will bring the community together.
