Question On Notice No. 383 asked in the Legislative Council on 10 October 2017 by Hon Alison Xamon

Question Directed to the: Leader of the House representing the Premier
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to my question on notice of 15 August 2017 regarding the establishment of a Commonwealth Redress Scheme, and I ask:

(a) would the Minister please elaborate on what the "key issues" are that are currently being considered by the Government in order to allow for an informed decision regarding opting into the Commonwealth Scheme;
(b) have any potential concerns been identified that may lead the Government to choose not to opt into this scheme; and
(c) if yes to (b), will the Minister please provide some information about the potential concerns which have been identified?
Answered on 28 November 2017

(a) As per the Premier’s recent comments, key elements in relation to the Commonwealth Redress Scheme (the Scheme) design, policy and financial aspects have not been finalised.

(b) Yes.

(c) From the Department’s analysis of the Scheme, it contains a number of critical problems and disincentives for entities to opt-in. The McGowan Government is committed to working constructively with the Commonwealth on this issue.
