Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 6 asked in the Legislative Council on 13 March 2018 by Hon Jacqui Boydell

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CAMP SCHOOLS — CLOSURE
      6. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the Minister for Education and Training:
I refer to the minister's media statement of 13 December 2017, which states —
Six camp school sites run by the Department of Education will close.
I refer also to an article in the Kalgoorlie Miner on 2 March in which Hon Kyle McGinn is quoted as saying —
''The general consensus seems to be that we want to close the camp schools outright, which is incorrect
      (1) Given that there is no mention in the minister's 11 January statement of camp schools, when was the decision made not to close them?
(2) What exactly is the government's intention for the six camp schools?
(3) Can the minister rule out the closure of any camp schools?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The decision to close six camp schools in their current form was made in early December 2017 and gazetted on 15 December 2017. In January 2018, the government decided to seek to secure alternative operators for the camp schools who will be able to offer ongoing access to school students at an affordable price. A procurement process is being undertaken to source alternative operators to continue to run them.
