JUDGES —
APPOINTMENTS
459. Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN to the Leader of the House
representing the Attorney General:
I refer to a report in The
Weekend West of 4 and 5 May 2019 about the Attorney General announcing
funding for additional judges.
(1) How many judges does he seek to
appoint and for which courts?
(2) When does he propose to make
those appointments?
(3) Upon what
business case or needs submissions and assessments are these proposed
appointments based?
(4) If they are based on a business
case or needs submission and assessment, can they be tabled?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) The article the honourable member refers to was
speculative and written prior to the release of the 2019–20
budget. The 2019–20 budget released last Thursday does not provide
funding for any additional judges in any courts. It is noted that in the
McGowan government's first budget, two additional judges and support
staff were funded for the District Court. In 2018, two additional magistrates
were also allocated.
