Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 108 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 March 2018 by Hon Robin Chapple

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CANE TOAD — CLASSIFICATION
      108. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the review of the declared pests of Western Australia commenced by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in July 2015, completed in May 2016, and accepted by the minister and published in the Government Gazette on 17 November 2017.
      (1) Will the minister table the technical review and stakeholder consultation that determined that a change in the control category, the area declared, and the keeping category or taxonomy under section 22(2) of the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 and the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Regulations 2013 was required when the declaration status was amended for the cane toad?
(2) If not, why not?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for the question.
      (1) Yes. I table the attached information. During stakeholder consultation, seven comments were received from the stakeholder reference group, and 23 were received from the broader community. All agreed with the recommendation made in the technical assessment that the cane toad be declared as a pest south of the twentieth latitude. This assessment is currently under review in response to further feedback and discussions with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The declaration status will be determined following this process.
[See paper 1162.]
(2) Not applicable.
