FISHING — LOCAL
LAWS — COTTESLOE
464. Hon RICK MAZZA to the minister representing the
Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the 23 February 2019 The
West Australian article headed ''Fishermen cry foul over Cottesloe
beach chain ban'', which states that the Cottesloe council wants to
prohibit the use of fishing lines with wire or chain, which are often used to
catch sharks.
(1) What power
does the local government have for matters that would usually be the
responsibility of the department of fisheries?
(2) Has the department of fisheries
ceded power to local government?
Hon
ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I
thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided
to me by the Minister for Fisheries.
(1) I am not in a
position to comment on the specific powers of local government. This is a matter
for the Minister for Local Government.
(2) There has
been no change to the jurisdiction of fisheries matters. The Department of
Primary Industries and Regional Development remains the lead agency for the
management of fish and aquatic resources in Western Australia. However, other
agencies may have powers to regulate activities that may impact on fishing.
