Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 84 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 March 2018 by Hon Robin Chapple

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

GREENPATCH DEVELOPMENT — CHROMIUM-6 — DALYELLUP
      84. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the Minister for Environment:
I refer to the titanium dioxide waste site in Dalyellup, in the Capel shire.
      (1) Has chromium-6 been found in the groundwater in one of the bores in the development area, commonly known as Greenpatch?
(2) Is chromium-6 found in the tailings owned by Cristal Global?
(3) Did the Satterley company state in a report that the chromium-6 came from the waste site?
(4) Has there been any illegal dumping in the development area commonly known as Greenpatch?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.
      (1) Chromium-6 has been detected in a bore on the western boundary of the Greenpatch development, in an area formerly leased by the adjacent waste residue disposal facility. Groundwater flows in a westerly direction away from the residential area of the Greenpatch development. Groundwater has been monitored in this well since the 1990s and the concentrations of chromium-6 are below the Department of Health's non-potable use guidelines, which are the appropriate assessment criteria for this site.
(2) Yes.
      (3) Yes. A report titled ''Preliminary Site Investigation, Lots 8019, 9105 and 9076 Dalyellup, Greenpatch Development, November 2016'' states that the presence of chromium-6 is likely to be localised and the result of former site operations in the adjacent waste residue disposal facility.
      (4) The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has not received any reports of illegal dumping of waste in the development area. The preliminary site investigation also did not identify evidence of illegal dumping.
