Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 716 asked in the Legislative Council on 11 August 2020 by Hon Peter Collier

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

CORONAVIRUS — INTERSTATE AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS —EXEMPTIONS

716. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I apologise at the outset for the manner in which my questions were presented today. I had IT issues and they were sent en masse, unfortunately.

I refer to the minister's response to question without notice 383, asked on 12 May 2020 in relation to travel restrictions.

(1) How many exemptions have been granted for interstate entry into Western Australia since 12 May 2020?

(2) How many exemptions have been granted for international entry into Western Australia since 20 May 2020?

(3) How many exemptions have been granted since the Quarantine (Closing the Border) Directions came into effect on 5 April 2020 that have not required quarantine for 14 days?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

The WA Police Force advise that the Quarantine (Closing the Border) Directions came into effect in Western Australia at 11.59 pm on 5 April 2020. Only those applicants who meet one of the categories of exemption prescribed in the directions are permitted entry into the state. Through the exemption process, police consider each application for entry into Western Australia on its merits, with applications determined by the State Emergency Coordinator or authorised officers appointed by the State Emergency Coordinator. Police further advise the hard border restrictions in place have resulted in a reduction by more than 98 per cent in passenger arrivals at Perth Airport compared with the same period last year.

(1) Between 12 May 2020 and 10 August 2020, 35 243 people have entered Western Australia from domestic air travel.

(2) Between 12 May 2020 and 10 August 2020, 7 093 people have entered Western Australia from international airline travel.

(3) Between 11.59 pm, 5 April 2020 and 10 August 2020, 6 661 people, many of who are aircrew from domestic flights, have been exempt from quarantine in accordance with the directions.
