Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 464 asked in the Legislative Council on 23 August 2017 by Hon Dr Steve Thomas

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY — SOUTH WEST REGION
      464. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the Minister for Environment:
This question is particularly timely, given the minister's comments on the front page of The West Australian today. I refer to the proposal supported by a number of local governments in the south west to develop a regional waste processing facility, noting the recommended location of site 16 on Goodwood Road in the Shire of Capel.
(1) Is the minister aware of this proposal?
      (2) Does the government support the development of a regional waste processing facility in the south west region?
      (3) Does the government support the proposed location at site 16?
      (4) Will the government maintain the existing funding allocated for a regional waste facility in the south west?
      (5) If yes to (4), will the funding be retained in its current account?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member some notice of this question.
      (1) Yes, I am aware of this proposal, and I am working closely with my cabinet colleagues to resolve this issue.
(2)–(5) The matter falls within the portfolio of my colleague the Minister for Regional Development, and I therefore request that the member resubmit these parts of the question to Hon Alannah MacTiernan. I would, however, like to confirm my broad support for local governments working together to deliver regional waste management solutions.
