CHEVRON AUSTRALIA — GORGON CARBON CAPTURE AND
STORAGE
592. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Environment:
I
refer to Chevron Australia's failure to fulfil its five-year target for
carbon capture and storage at its Gorgon LNG project.
(1) Since calling
for a meeting with Chevron in July 2021, has the minister met with Chevron
about its failure to meet its emissions offset target at the Gorgon LNG
project?
(2) If yes to (1) —
(a) how many times has the minister met with Chevron
about this project since the end of the five-year period; and
(b) what were the
outcomes of these meetings?
(3) Will Chevron
be facing any financial penalties or other consequences for its failure to meet
the five-year emissions offset target at Gorgon?
(4) How will the state government
ensure that Chevron accounts for the shortfall in its CCS system?
Hon
STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf of the
Minister for Environment.
(1) Yes.
(2) (a) Once. The minister intends
to meet with Chevron again in the near future.
(b) The meeting
was productive and the minister will continue to work with Chevron and the
Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to ensure the issue is
addressed,
(3) The Department of Water and Environmental
Regulation is assessing the data available. It is not appropriate to
comment on possible outcomes while this assessment is ongoing.
(4) A range of avenues exist under Ministerial
Statement 800 and the Environmental Protection Act 1986 to address the
shortfall in carbon dioxide injection. The state government is considering its
options in this regard.
