Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 631 asked in the Legislative Council on 21 August 2018 by Hon Colin De Grussa

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

SHARKS — HAZARD MITIGATION — DRUM LINE TRIAL

631. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the minister representing the Minister for Fisheries:

I refer to the government's decision to trial Shark-Management-Alert-in-Real-Time drum lines in the south west.

(1) Will the minister table all information and correspondence provided by New South Wales?

(2) How much funding has the government allocated to this trial?

(3) What has changed since the minister's response to question without notice 364 on 15 May, when he said, ''Without a scientific assessment, it would not be appropriate for a minister to commit to these drum lines at this time''?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Fisheries.

(1) Due to the level of information required, it is not possible to provide an answer in the time available. I therefore I request that the honourable member place this part of the question on notice.

(2) Final costings for the trial are yet to be determined.

(3) The Western Australian government has been seeking data from New South Wales on its drum line trial. Unfortunately, the New South Wales government has not provided the information that was requested. A decision was therefore made to conduct our own 12-month non-lethal SMART drum line research trial to determine its effectiveness as a shark hazard-mitigation tool.
