Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 504 asked in the Legislative Council on 26 June 2018 by Hon Robin Chapple

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING — KIMBERLEY
      504. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the Minister for Environment:
I congratulate Ms Josie Farrer, MLA, member for Kimberley, for protecting the Kimberley country from companies like Buru Energy from fracking the Canning Basin. The member for Kimberley has called on the state government for, and I quote, ''a full ban on fracking in the Kimberley and all of Western Australia''.
(1) Does the minister agree with the member for Kimberley?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
      (3) Regardless of the outcome or findings of the scientific inquiry into hydraulic fracture stimulation in Western Australia, will the minister support the call by traditional owners and implement a full ban on fracking for all of WA?
(4) If no to (3), why not?
(5) If yes to (3), when does the minister intend to do this?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(5) The state government will make a decision on the future of the moratorium on fracking once it has received a report on the findings of the independent scientific inquiry into hydraulic fracture stimulation in Western Australia.
