Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 485 asked in the Legislative Council on 20 May 2020 by Hon Rick Mazza

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

WATER CORPORATION — ROCKY GULLY

485. Hon RICK MAZZA to the minister representing the Minister for Water:

I refer to the minister's reply to my question without notice 464 yesterday in which the minister said —

Due to water quality concerns, the Rocky Gully dam has not been used by Water Corporation to supply drinking water to the Rocky Gully community since 2011.

(1) Will the minister please explain why Water Corporation sent a letter to Frankland residents on 1 April 2020 stating that due to the declining level in the Frankland dam, from the following week water would be carted from the former town dam in Rocky Gully to the dam at Frankland to supply the town with drinking water?

(2) If the Water Corporation letter is correct, how will the health and safety of Frankland residents be guaranteed, given the Rocky Gully dam water quality concerns as described by the minister?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

That is actually a good question, and there is a good answer! I thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for Water.

(1)–(2) The Water Corporation is committed to supplying water that complies with 100 per cent of the health-related Australian drinking water guidelines set out by the Department of Health. Frankland residents were advised that due to the declining level in the Frankland dam, from 14 April 2020 water would be carted from the former town dam in Rocky Gully to the dam at Frankland to supply the town with drinking water.

Once the water has been delivered to the Frankland dam, it is treated at the local water treatment plant before it is distributed through the local pipe network. Treatment ensures that water supplied to Frankland residents continues to meet 100 per cent of the health standards mandated by the Australian drinking water quality guidelines set out by the Department of Health. There is no treatment plant in Rocky Gully.
