Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 798 asked in the Legislative Council on 13 August 2019 by Hon Donna Faragher

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

KINDERGARTENS — VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

798. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and Training:

I refer to kindergarten enrolments for 2020 and the government's no jab, no play policy, which took effect from 22 July 2019.

(1) Can the minister confirm whether the new immunisation requirements apply to applications for kindergarten enrolments that were made prior to 22 July 2019?

(2) If yes to (1), are schools and community kindergartens required to follow up all parents and/or carers who submitted an application for enrolment prior to this date to confirm whether their child's immunisation status is up to date or if they are eligible for an exemption before their enrolment for 2020 can be confirmed?

(3) If yes to (2), will the minister table the relevant documentation that has been provided to schools, which outlines the new requirements, particularly as they relate to the processing of applications made prior to 22 July 2019?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Yes. When an application for enrolment has not been accepted and/or finalised, the new immunisation requirements must be met. New enrolments from 22 July 2019 are required to meet the new requirements.

(2) Yes. However, the follow-up to provide immunisation details, and other relevant documentation required for enrolment, is only with those parents whose child is offered a place.

(3) Several documents have been provided to public schools by the Department of Education. Links to Department of Health materials were also provided. I table the attached Department of Education documents.
