MARKET HALL — YAGAN SQUARE
575. Hon NEIL THOMSON to the minister representing the
Minister for Lands:
I refer to the recent failure of
Market Hall at Yagan Square.
(1) When did DevelopmentWA first
became aware that tenants at Market Hall were at risk?
(2) Was any commercial support
given to tenants to ensure that Market Hall continued operation?
(3) How much of
the 2017–18 activation budget under the Metropolitan Redevelopment
Authority was earmarked for Yagan Square and adjoining MRA Northbridge
developments?
(4) How much of
the 2020–21 activation budget under DevelopmentWA was earmarked for
Yagan Square and adjoining developments?
(5) When will the commercial spaces
at Yagan Square be fully tenanted?
Hon
ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for the
question. The following information has been provided by the Minister for
Lands.
(1) DevelopmentWA
has worked with operators since the outset of the project to mitigate risks to
tenancies. Performance of Market Hall has
been challenged by a lack of through traffic and surrounding development.
(2) Commercial
support has been provided through waiving of rents and rental arrears in
appropriate circumstances, including due to the impacts of COVID-19, as well as
promotional support to businesses through the onsite digital tower.
(3)–(4) Additional
time is required to confirm the amount spent on activation from the project
budget. The answer to this question will be provided as soon as possible.
(5) DevelopmentWA
is in the process of reconfiguring Market Hall and will be seeking proposals
for the internal space through an expression of interest that will commence
shortly.
