BANNED DRINKERS REGISTER
TRIAL — PILBARA
577. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the minister representing the
Minister for Racing and Gaming:
I refer to comments made by the
minister in the other place stating that he is hopeful that the banned drinkers
register will be implemented in the Pilbara before the middle of the year.
Given that we are now in June, I ask the following questions.
(1) Does the
minister have a date on which we can expect to see the banned drinkers register
in operation throughout the Pilbara?
(2) Given
comments in the media that the pilot will cost $400 000 and that the government
is in talks with a private organisation about assisting with funding, will the
minister disclose any organisations that have previously been or are currently
engaged in discussion with the government?
(3) Will the
minister table a breakdown of the anticipated costs that are included in the
$400 000 cost of the pilot program?
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN
replied:
I thank the member for the
question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for
Racing and Gaming.
(1) The minister has advised that the implementation
of the trial will follow a decision of the Liquor Commission on the Pilbara-wide restrictions, which is made
wholly independent of the minister and the government. It is expected that this decision may occur in July
this year; however, this will be decided by the commission.
(2) No.
Discussions with the private sector are ongoing and confidential. The Liquor
Stores Association of Western Australia and the Australian Hotels Association
form an integral part of the project team and will continue to be involved in
the implementation of the trial.
(3) No. The
estimated cost provided was based on the price of scanning machines for each
venue included in the trial.
