TEACHER REGISTRATION
582. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I
refer to the State Administrative Tribunal's decision on 4 May 2020 to
cancel the teaching registration of Philip James Weickhardt and to
disqualify him from applying for registration for two years.
(1) Is the minister aware of this
case?
(2) If Mr
Weickhardt applies for registration after the two-year disqualification period,
what criteria would he have to pass to be successful?
(3) Further to (2), is the Teacher Registration Board
of Western Australia able to apply restrictions or conditions on a registration?
Hon SUE
ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The best interests of children are
obviously of paramount consideration and the outcome of this matter is an
important reminder to teachers about the importance of maintaining professional
boundaries with their students.
(1) Yes.
(2) Subject to
the category of registration applied for, the requirements an applicant must

(a) holding qualifications deemed
suitable for teacher registration;
(b) having English language skills,
both written and oral, prescribed as suitable for registration;
(c) meeting professional standards approved by the
Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia; and
(d) being assessed as a fit and
proper person to be a registered teacher.
(3) Yes.
