Question Without Notice No. 489 asked in the Legislative Council on 24 August 2017 by Hon Tim Clifford
Parliament: 40 Session: 1
489. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the Minister for Community Services:
(1) Does the government intend to meet its 2015 promise to halve overall homelessness and to offer supported accommodation to all rough sleepers who need it by 2020?
(2) Does the government know how many people in WA by region are currently homeless?
(3) If yes to (2), please provide the number of people by region who are homeless and the number of people in WA by region who are currently sleeping rough.
(4) If yes to (1) and no to (2), how will the government measure whether it has met its promise?
Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.
(1) The McGowan government committed to addressing a range of issues that contribute to reducing homelessness. In particular, we will be aided by our policies on stopping family and domestic violence and supporting communities. The government looks forward to progressing and delivering its commitments and is currently working through the budget process to do so.
(2) The Australian Bureau of Statistics publication ''Census of Population and Housing: Estimating Homelessness'' is used to report on the number of homeless people in Australia and Western Australia. The most recent homelessness ABS publication ''Census of Population and Housing: Estimating Homelessness, 2011'', released on 12 November 2012, contains information on the number of homeless people and people who were in improvised dwellings or tents or slept out on census night 2011.
(3) I seek leave to incorporate the answer into Hansard because it is in tabular form.
