Question On Notice No. 1308 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 May 2018 by Hon Alison Xamon

Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment representing the Minister for Corrective Services
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to transgender and gender diverse individuals in prisons across Western Australia, and the important role hormone replacement therapy plays in maintaining their health and wellbeing, and I ask:
(a) is hormone replacement therapy available to transgender and gender diverse inmates;
(b) if yes to (a), to what extent and under which conditions is it available to transgender and gender diverse inmates; and
(c) if no to (a), why not?

Answered on 14 August 2018

The Department of Justice advises:

  1. Yes.
  2. If a person is received into prison and is already undergoing hormone replacement therapy that has been prescribed by a Specialist in the community, Corrective Services Health Services will continue treatment in consultation with the treating specialist.
  3. Not applicable.
