Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 99 asked in the Legislative Council on 19 February 2020 by Hon Rick Mazza

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

ANIMAL ACTIVISM — TRESPASS

99. Hon RICK MAZZA to the Leader of the House representing the Attorney General:

I refer to comments attributed to Attorney General John Quigley in The West Australian article of 23 May 2019 titled ''Trespassing vegan activists to be banned from WA farms'', in which he said —

we are changing the law in a substantial way that spells big trouble for anyone who goes trespassing on agricultural land with the intention of disrupting agriculture,''

(1) What has the Attorney General done to strengthen trespass laws since he made the aforementioned comments last year?

(2) When will the trespass law changes be introduced into Parliament?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(2) The McGowan government is committed to introducing legislation to strengthen penalties for those who trespass upon farmland to interfere with food production while, at the same time, balancing enhanced rights of entry for inspectors to abattoirs, knackeries and intensive farms. The drafting of these laws is well advanced and the bill will be introduced as soon as practicable.
