Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 270 asked in the Legislative Council on 22 June 2017 by Hon Aaron Stonehouse

Parliament: 40 Session: 1

URANIUM MINING BAN
      270. Hon AARON STONEHOUSE to the minister representing the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
It is with deep regret that I note that the state government has banned the future mining of uranium in Western Australia. This is all the more tragic given that our neighbours have committed to drastically increase their number of nuclear reactors. China will go from 32 to 97 by 2025, and India wants to go from 23 to 34 over a similar period. We know that increasing demand for uranium overseas means more mines at home and we know that more mines means more revenue, royalties, social benefits and most importantly more jobs. Why is the minister pursuing a policy that will ultimately lead to fewer jobs for Western Australians?
The PRESIDENT: Before I give the call to the minister, I might just say that in accordance with the standing orders, questions should be concise, as should answers. Rather than reading a long preamble, perhaps the member could cut to the chase of his question in future.
Hon Aaron Stonehouse: I take that on board.
Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:
I thank the member for some notice of that question. The Minister for Mines and Petroleum has provided the following answer.
Labor's announcement yesterday on uranium mining is consistent with the position that we took to the election.
