BROOME REGIONAL PRISON SITE — 12 MILE COMMUNITY
413. Hon NEIL THOMSON to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to a decision of the state
government to locate the new Broome prison near the 12 Mile community in the
West Kimberley.
(1) Did the
minister provide a briefing to the Broome shire council of the site options
prior to making its decision; and, if yes —
(a) on what date
was that briefing held;
(b) who was in
attendance; and
(c) how many
possible locations were presented in the briefing?
(2) Did the
minister or his department seek land-use planning advice and not just land
tenure advice from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage?
(3) If no to (1)
or (2) —
(a) does the
minister concede that the best planning land-use outcomes will be achieved when
he refers the matter to local government and land-use planning experts; and
(b) will the
minister now revoke any decision on the site and refer the matter to the Shire
of Broome and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage for proper
land-use planning consideration?
(3) If yes to
(1) or (2), will the minister make all correspondence concerning land-use
planning for the site publicly available?

Member,
I apologise. That question has been signed off, but, for some reason, it is not
within the file. Hopefully, the staff are listening now and they can
bring in a copy for me and I will read that answer when I get it.
