Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 617 asked in the Legislative Council on 10 August 2022 by Hon Dr Brad Pettitt

Parliament: 41 Session: 1

CASUARINA PRISON — UNIT 18 DETAINEES — EDUCATION SERVICES

617. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

I refer to the minister's comments in the media that Banksia Hill Detention Centre had resumed running a full program of education, support and reintegration services.

(1) Are the young people detained in unit 18 at Casuarina Prison also receiving a full program of education, support and reintegration services?

(2) Who is providing education services in unit 18 at Casuarina Prison?

(3) Could the minister please confirm the number of young people in Banksia Hill Detention Centre and Casuarina Prison, respectively, who attended more than one hour of school per day in the past four weeks?

(4) How many hours of schooling have each of the young people detained in unit 18 at Casuarina Prison received since being moved on 20 July 2022?

Hon MATTHEW SWINBOURN replied:

I thank the member for some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Corrective Services.

(1) Education, support and reintegration services were facilitated from 20 July to 30 July 2022. Following the disturbance on 30 July, education services have temporarily been suspended. The full-time education program will be recommencing as soon as possible. Support services, including onsite psychologists, Aboriginal support officers, health and mental health services, and case management staff have consistently been provided at unit 18.

(2) Education services are facilitated by the same qualified teaching staff from Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

(3) School holidays were between 4 July to 20 July 2022, at which time all young people were engaged in a school holiday program facilitated by internal and external services. Education is facilitated from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm each day. As of 21 July 2022, education has been facilitated in Banksia Hill, except for two days. The 16 to 17 young people accommodated in unit 18 were engaged in an informal education program from 25 July to 29 July 2022 for more than one hour per day.

(4) See above.
