Parliament: 40 Session: 1

ANIMAL WELFARE — GREYHOUND RACING INDUSTRY

901. Hon ALISON XAMON to the minister representing the Minister for Racing and Gaming:

I refer to the greyhound meeting held at Mandurah on Tuesday, 23 July 2019.

(1) Did the sample taken from the greyhound Who's Got Spice at that meeting return a result for a substance or substances that is in contravention of ''RWWA: Rules of Greyhound Racing 2008''?

(2) If yes to (1) —

(a) what substance did Who's Got Spice test positive for; and

(b) what action has been taken as a result of this test?

(3) Will all dogs trained by Who's Got Spice's trainer now be tested for banned substances?

(4) If no to (3), why not?

Hon ALANNAH MacTIERNAN replied:

I thank the member for that very interesting question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Racing and Gaming.

(1)–(4) For reasons of natural justice and to preserve the ability to properly investigate any reported irregularities in accordance with the powers afforded to stewards under the Racing and Wagering Western Australia Act 2003 and the rules of racing, the status or results of analysis are not disclosed prior to any potential operational matters being concluded. Findings are released publicly following due process.
