Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 1084 asked in the Legislative Council on 28 March 2018 by Hon Alison Xamon

Question Directed to the: Minister for Education and Training
Parliament: 40 Session: 1

Question

I refer to the Government’s decision to close Moora Residential College, and to the impact on staff employed at the college, and I ask:
(a) will staff be offered positions at other public sector employers in Moora;
(b) if no to (a), why not;
(c) will staff be offered redundancy; and
(d) if no to (c), why not?

Answered on 15 May 2018

  1. Staff on fixed-term contracts will have their contracts honoured. Permanent staff will become registrable employees under Part 2 of the Public Sector Management (Redeployment and Redundancy) Regulations 2014. A registrable employee can be transferred to another position in the Department of Education or, where this is not possible, can become a registered employee and therefore considered for transfer to a position in another public sector agency. Regional employees who do not elect to take up voluntary separation where their position has been abolished will be found meaningful work within their town or within a reasonable travel distance from their location. That work may be different to the work they currently do.
  2. Not applicable.
  3. Staff at Moora Residential College may be offered a redundancy where they have lodged an expression of interest for the Voluntary Targeted Separation Scheme, and the Department has deemed an individual’s skills and/or qualifications are not transferable to another suitable position. Voluntary severance is a possible option available within the Regulations. All offers are subject to the Director General’s approval.
  4. Not applicable.
